Notes:
Abandoned Work
CENELEC
GMTC was involved in an abandoned attempt to create a Part 2 to EN 50262 to cover Cable Gland Accessories.
IEC
As a further attempt at standardisation, the GMTC was instrumental in proposing a new 2-part IEC standard as follows:
Part 1 was issued as an IEC proposal (20/533/NP) but was not accepted by the international standards community as a new work item. It reared its head again when as IEC PT62444. The only difference being that the work was now proposed (somewhat pedantically) as a Cable Management project under IEC SC23A rather than Cables project under IEC TC20. This was accepted by the international standards community.
Part 2 received little or no support from the UK hazardous area committees, whose members feel that the current arrangements are adequate. GMTC wonders why the relevant committees don't bite our hand off if we are offering to do this work, because the big standards committees have usually dropped off by the time we start talking about glands.
At present there is very little cross-reference between gland standards and protection standards. The UK hazardous area standards committees aren't too keen to cooperate with the UK cable or accessories committees. The GMTC has tried several times to encourage better cooperation (hence the GMTC's suggestion of a 2-part IEC standard).
In terms of CENELEC standards work, it has to be said that our EU partners have not always been too ready to discuss hazardous areas when working on EN50262.
