Press Release

From: The Gland Manufacturers Technical Committee (GMTC)

The Gland Manufacturers Technical Committee has announced an important new development that will impact all suppliers and users of cable glands. The new European Cable Gland Standard – EN 50262, which substantially replaces BS 6121, is now published and applicable to industrial cable installations.

The new standard specifies minimum safety requirements and performance categories to ensure safe installation practices and these new requirements may differ from those previously adopted.

Within these requirements, European directives closely associated with cable glands, such as the low voltage directive, stipulate that it is mandatory that all essential safety requirements (ESR’s) are met prior to the compulsory “CE” mark being applied.

GMTC consider it is essential that suppliers, importers and wholesalers are aware of these requirements and understand that it is their direct responsibility to maintain a technical file and to ensure that all cable glands supplied comply with all the relevant directives and are “CE” identified. The penalties for non-compliance are heavy and can take the form of fines and/or imprisonment.

GMTC, represents the cable gland manufacturers within UK and collectively ensures the safe design, manufacture and installation of cable glands. They are represented on several UK and European Standards Committees.

In order to ensure that this essential information is made available to all, they have established a web site at http://www.gmtc.org.uk (and follow the link to “Publications”) which contains information on full compliance to the new standards. This information can be downloaded, or, if preferred, it is available through cable gland manufacturers or cable suppliers.
